The city of Pium has its history linked to the exploitation of rock crystal, with the discovery of mineral deposits in 1940, in the town of Vila dos Piaus, today Pium. With the decline of the exploration of the crystal, families settled in the region and began to devote themselves to farming activities.
On December 6, 1949 the village was elevated to the rank of District and on June 23, 1953 to the status of municipality, under the name Pium, dismembered from Porto Nacional.
