The great benefit of Tocantins, either for day or night activities, is the weather. Temperatures are always around 30C during day time (06:00-18:00) and 22C at night. Only if you are camping in the hills you will care for a sweater at night.
Another benefit is the absence of a “beaten track”. Even if you will not realize it all the time when you travel around in this state, but in the nineties this rural land was extremely undisclosed, e.g. having only one asphalt road.
You will have to find out things on your own here. Speaking a little Portuguese is a great benefit.
Fluvial Beaches
In the dry season, when the Tocantins and Araguaia Rivers flow is reduced, several beaches arise in an exotic scenery, sunny and mild, with almost virgin white sands. The period of formation of sand banks goes from June to September and involves the month of vacation in Brazil. Thus, it is not only Tocantins’ families who seize the opportunity to swim in the rivers, practice camping, sports fishing, water sports and enjoy an infrastructure of leisure including bars and restaurants. People come from all over the country.
The state government and municipal administrations provide the basic infrastructure like power, water and sewage lines, boats, security, medical services, rescue, telephone, banks, sports arenas and stages for shows and presentations. Across the state, more than 40 beaches are well visited.
Five of them stand out:
. Tartaruga (Turtle) Beach, in Peixe County (302 km from the capital, Palmas);
. Ilha Grande (Large Island) Beach, in Araguanã County (459 km from Palmas);
. Praias do Sol e da Ilha (Sun and Island Beaches), in Caseara County (256 km from Palmas);
. Gaivota (Seagull) Beach, in Araguacema County (297 km from Palmas).
After finishing the Lajeado barrage in 2002 several permanent beaches have been created: 1 in Porto Nacional (Ilha Porto Real) and 3 in Palmas (Graciosa, Prata and Arnos).
Waterfalls
September days in Tocantins can get hot. What about visiting one of the hundreds of waterfalls with perfect clear water and opportunities for a refreshing dive? The mountainous area on the east side of the river Tocantins has countless waterfalls, and many are easily accessible by car.
The best time for visiting waterfalls is during the dry season as the water will be clear.
Bars and nightclubs
Please ask your hotel for the best bars and clubs (boates) nearby.
Dancing in Palmas: Friday and Saturday night, starting at 23:00, the bars are Vila de Palma and Bianco. Age of visitors 15-25.
